The art of doing

I’ve been listening to Robert Pirsig’s 1974 lecture on how the book Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance came to be written.

I wrote this down:

“It wasn’t separate from what I was doing. It arose from it.”

People tell me they haven’t got a book in them, or a creative project.

I’d have said the same. I didn’t think I was writing a book when I wrote the Good Coach Bad Coach Manifesto. The book followed 4 years later.

I was writing what I felt needed writing.

We plan the session, then deliver it. We design the programme, then apply it. The making sits apart from the doing.

What changes when we see what we do as a practice that emerges from doing?
