It’s hard to run fast when you’re looking back. If you keep looking over your shoulder, you lose your forward focus.
I can think of a few sports where it’s common to see an athlete with their shoulder turned slightly to receive a pass, catch a ball, or pay attention to what else is going on.
They are scanning for information. A change of direction, a shift in body position, anything that helps complete the task at hand.
